tree trunk table
I’ve walked past this tree trunk dozens of times in the woods and never really paid any attention to it. One day, while walking by, I stopped to look inside one of the hollow branches. To my surprise, as I stood on my tip toes, I could see all of the way to the bottom of the hollowed-out trunk.
I immediately realized that I could make an interesting table from it by placing a piece of glass on top of it. A few days later I took a chainsaw, and a dolly, out to its location and cut it off as close to the ground as possible. I strapped it to the dolly and proceeded to drag and pull it the 1/3 mile, or so, back to my Studio.
I considered making two short Coffee tables out of it but just couldn’t bring myself to cut the tree trunk in two pieces. I decided that one 42” tall “Bar Height” table would be the ideal use of this trunk. I rough cut it with my chainsaw and then setup my router sled to get a level surface on the top and bottom.
I applied a wood hardening solution to it to stabilize and harden some of the soft and rotted wood. I then began experimenting with different types of lighting to highlight the character of the inside of this trunk including the remnants of the center of a branch where it was beginning to grow. The best lighting idea that I could come up with was LED side view strip lighting that wraps around the contours of the inside of the trunk. It shines a “warm white” light down into the tree trunk and is dimmable.
All that was left to do was to get a piece of glass to top it off. I ended up using a 42” diameter piece of glass that is 5/8” thick. The final product is a one-of-a-kind Bar Table that will be a great conversation piece when good friends are sitting, or standing, around it with a few cold drinks.
